Nick Clegg has shown the true colour of the Liberal Democrats as he announces that the party no longer supports the government’s bedroom tax in its current form.
If the Liberal Democrat stance is that the implementation of the bedroom tax is wrong why did they vote for it in the first place?
The implementation of the draconian policy has cost the taxpayer hundreds of millions of pounds in addition to the original housing benefit bill – money that has been wasted and could have been put to better use.
Perhaps this typifies the way the Liberal Democrats have conducted themselves during the term of the coalition government. They have allowed the Conservative element to destroy the foundation of our society – they said nothing – they did nothing. They sat passively as policy after policy; law after law, and lie after lie was fed to the public making life for the poor and vulnerable intolerable in some cases – so much so that some people took their own lives.
Now, one year before the general election, the Liberal Democrats are beginning to state their objections – far too late in the day to stop any of the suffering and poverty sweeping the country.
The members of the Liberal Democrats in the coalition government have shown remarkable cowardice. So much so that it has forced some of their own MPs to resign from the party in disgust at the compliance with every whim of the Conservatives.
Rightly so, Clegg has been accused of hypocrisy by the two other main political parties.
Labour depicted the move as a cynical bid by the Lib Dems to distance themselves from an unpopular policy less than a year before the election. Rachel Reeves, the shadow work and pensions secretary, said: “This is unbelievable hypocrisy from Nick Clegg. The Lib Dems voted for the bedroom tax. There wouldn’t be a bedroom tax if it wasn’t for the Lib Dems. And in February when Labour tabled a bill to scrap the bedroom tax, the Lib Dems were nowhere to be seen. This just goes to show why you can’t trust a word the Lib Dems say – it is clear the only way to cancel the bedroom tax is to elect a Labour government next year.” (Source: The Guardian).
The excuse of the Liberal Democrats is that they changed their mind after reports showed that the bedroom tax policy was not working. Most people with half a brain could have seen that it was never going to work from the time the details were announced. In addition, it has been clear that the policy has not been working long before today.
It is too late for Clegg and his associates to try and court public support. He is as guilty of the atrocious way government has conducted itself as Cameron – if not more so. However wrong the Conservative policies were and are, at least they did something – unlike the Liberal Democrats who sat on their backsides and did nothing of any benefit to citizens, and were complicit in many of the draconian policies being implemented.
If Cameron is the ‘dunce of Downing Street’ (as Ed Miliband put it) then Clegg is definitely the coward.
