At the current time, about 10% of the UK population live in areas where the dangerous chemical fluoride is added to their water supply. The government’s public health advisory body, Public Health England (PHE), is urging councils across the country to add fluoride to their water supplies.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral in water and other substances which we ingest in very low amounts, and is Calcium fluoride (CaF2). The fluoride added to water supplies is a by-product of the fertiliser and aluminium industry – Hexafluorosilicic acid (H2SiF6) – which is a very different toxic chemical.
According to their report, ‘Water fluoridation: health monitoring report for England 2014’, on average there are 11% fewer 12 year-olds with tooth decay in fluoridated areas than non-fluoridated areas, and 28% fewer 5 year-olds. The report admits that there could be other factors attributable to these results.
Mass fluoridation has become something of an ‘urban myth’ in the field of public health. When studies have been conducted, they have clearly shown (as the PHE report does) that there are minimal potential improvements in dental health and little is known of the long-term impact of ingesting the chemical.
Even at the one part per million (1mg per litre) – which is the ‘dose’ in the public water supply – ingesting fluoride added to water supplies could potentially affect bones, the brain, thyroid gland, kidneys, and unborn babies.
For more information on the effects of fluoride see our article ‘Fluoride in your water – you may want to think about that’.
The fact is, fluoride can be of benefit in a good dental hygiene routine when applied TOPICALLY (for example using toothpaste which is spat out) – NOT ingested.
Proper diet and oral hygiene are far more effective at keeping our mouths healthy than mass medicating the population.
No regard is given to how the chemical could affect members of the population with other health conditions, or the elderly or very young, who may have reduced resilience to the chemical.
If you go to your family doctor and they give you a prescription, generally we think that they have taken into consideration other health factors which could cause adverse reactions. With mass fluoridation none of those factors are taken into account.
The UK (specifically England) and USA are two of very few countries which fluorinate water supplies.
At present, 97% of the western European population drinks non-fluoridated water. This includes: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland.
The majority of European countries that do not fluorinate the water supply cite ethical and medical concerns as the main reasons. In some countries, there is an outright ban on fluoridation. For example, Germany states:
“Generally, in Germany fluoridation of drinking water is forbidden. The relevant German law allows exceptions to the fluoridation ban on application. The argumentation of the Federal Ministry of Health against a general permission of fluoridation of drinking water is the problematic nature of compuls[ory] medication.”
You can read official statements from other European countries of why they do not permit the fluoridation of water here.
You have evidence of the detrimental effects of chemical fluoride in your own home. If you use toothpaste, take a look at the warnings. On the supermarket own-brand toothpaste in front of me as I write this, there is the following warning:
“…minimise swallowing. In case of intake of fluoride from other sources consult a doctor.”
There you have it. Evidence right in front of you that the intake of fluoride is to be minimised.
There are good reasons why the vast majority of the Western world has banned fluoridation of their water supplies, and yet the UK government (of which Public Health England is part of) is recommending the use of an outdated form of mass medication which could cause health problems for its population.
We could ask why – but any reasoning would be conjecture because none of those involved in government have never revealed why they think mass medication is such a good idea in light of very clear evidence to the contrary.
It seems that organisations such as the PHE are very selective in the research they do and the data they use. So selective, that they only choose data which supports their intended outcome – which in turn supports the whims of politicians who can score political points by pretending to be doing something constructive for public health.
