As much as £250,000 of taxpayers’ cash will be spent on upgrading a gym for MPs, peers and Parliament staff.
The Westminster Gym, which is open only to parliamentary passholders, will get a studio devoted to spinning, an exercise craze that involves intense group workouts on stationary cycles, often done in time to music.
There will be a new towel room and the reception will be updated with display cases, pin boards, shelving and a desk, according to House of Commons authorities.
As recently as March 2010, the ventilation of the whole basement, including the gym, was redone at a cost of £247,500 – but it too will have to be improved in the latest round of building.
Jonathan Isaby, of campaign group the Taxpayers’ Alliance, said public cash to the gym should be cut.
